You as a coach, might believe you have the world’s best program to develop athletes. You have spent years tinkering with the program, researching and talking to other experts. Your programs on the surface look great, but they lack what I call ‘mainstream stickability’.
Sport needs to focus on solving its own financial and governance issues before it looks to develop any new opportunities. A statement that is rooted in traditional staleness of an inward looking business model. If you are continually looking towards your navel then you will eventually trip over or walk into something that has been staring you down. Something that Governments and failing businesses do very well.
As the latest Super Rugby franchise rolls into town, the school and rugby club engagements begin with sporting role models being put in front of our youth athletes, selling them healthy messages. Many would say that this is their duty as role models; others might say this is a waste of valuable time and resources, particularly if it costs the club money. Personally I believe it can be effective, but only if it is part of an active role model program.
Growing up, we dream of being like our sporting heroes and even when we have grown up, we watch on with admiration and respect. But not many people have an understanding of what goes on behind the scenes to get athletes on the field week to week in season. Many would believe that elite athletes are pampered and lead a charmed life. My week long experience showed me that this couldn’t be further from the truth.
High performance is a term that is thrown around sport with a relentless drive towards achieving results. Many believe that this requires resources, the latest technology and supplements and fancy training equipment. Whilst this is true in elite sport, it is nothing without purpose. If you were to build the world’s best sports club, what would it look like? Where would you start in terms of building that club? I would start by building a talented team that had the attitude to match the values of the club.
